High school is a roller coaster. It's a summary of what comes right after: real life. Moments of happiness that result in sadness, love that turns into hate, and friendship that turns into love. Once you release yourself from your parents' loving grip, there's no turning back. Only harsh lessons, and if you're smart enough, you'll take notes along this bumpy road. Every moment, every interaction is another piece of a puzzle that will form into what we call a fully formed personality. An adult. It's the actions and reactions you choose, that make you into what you'll become. Every choice you make is a stroke contributed to the finished painting. So choose wisely. You can't say this to a teenager and expect them to listen to you. But that's exactly what makes everybody's painting so unique and beautiful. My advice? Try making memories you'll smile to when you'll be drinking your morning coffee in a rocking chair, listening to your child's loud snoring. Actually, scratch that, tea is a better choice. What's my story? A story I remember and smile to. And if I could, I'd buy a ticket to that roller coaster ride again, any day.
You can't label people as good or bad. They can be good or bad to you, but it's only a subjective grade. The choices they made can be good or bad. We are all both the antagonist and the protagonist, the villain and the hero. The main characters of this story are 7 friends, in your every day high school.
"I'm late!" That simple thought has been running over and over through Lily's mind, in a repetitive tone. Her white, summer dress with a fun flower print was flying through the wind along with her long, auburn locks. She loved mornings, but somehow had a rough time waking up. She was in such a hurry this morning that she forgot the check the weather forecast, and now hated herself because the outfit she chose obviously wasn't as fit as she'd like it to be. An occasional "I'm freezing!" interrupted her agony over being late.
Just as she arrived in front of her beloved café, Frida, named after her favorite painter Frida Kahlo, she stopped to take a breath. And also to not look messy as she makes her grand entrance. After a few minutes of panting, Lily mentally slapped herself for wearing these cute white heels. But it was a good day, she reminded herself. A great day! Negativity can't influence her, especially now. As spring came, people seem to be more relaxed and carefree. No nervous taxi drivers yelling, no bus drivers closing doors in people's faces, no businessmen screaming in their phones, and no kids refusing to go to kindergarten. Laughter filled the air, and occasionally a gossip or two. It was one of the last days of spring break, and Lily was determined to enjoy it to the fullest. She fixed her bangs, put on her best smile and opened the door of the Frida café.
And there she saw him. Alex. Alexander, her prince charming. It's funny how the butterflies in her tummy still went crazy whenever she saw him. She had to use every ounce of strength not to giggle like a fangirl, as she saw his dark brown perfectly styled hair.
"Playing with a spoon isn't as entertaining as I hoped it would be." A sarcastic thought went through Alexander's mind, as he was trying to deal with his boredom for 20 minutes straight.
"Alex!" he looked up immediately to the sound of that bubbly voice. There she was, his pretty girlfriend, who decided to show up after all. Forcing a handsome smile on his face, he got up to greet her like a nice guy. She ran into his arms and gave him a quick peck. He couldn't help himself but feel warmth spreading over his chest because of this childish move. But that's not how Alexander works with a girlfriend. He grabbed her arm and gently pulled her into a long, soft kiss.
"Hey you" he said, looking at Lily's closed eyes and long black eyelashes. Before she could snap back into reality, he pulled out her chair and led her to it. "I'm such a gentleman" he mentally rolled his eyes at his actions.
" You already ordered me a hot chocolate! My favorite! " Lily squealed, happy that she doesn't need to wait for another 15 minutes for the busy waitress to get a taste of her delicious sweet drink. For probably the millionth time in just a day, she thought how thankful she was to have such an amazing guy for a boyfriend.
"Of course babe, but it's probably cold, since it was ordered 20 minutes ago" replied Alex, trying to sound as harmless as possible. And once again, Lily's heart melt at the sound of the cute nickname.
"I'm so sorry Alex! But it was such an exhausting day yesterday, I couldn't bring myself to get out of my bed! Tia and I thought we'd go shopping, and…"
"And there she goes. Not even 15 minutes in, and already blubbering about stuff. Shopping, how fun. Too bad my brain isn't ready to listen to this nonsense this early in the morning after all that beer mixed with video games yesterday."
Alex really liked his girl. Really, he did. Her innocence, her purity, and absolute positivity that contrasts his monotone life. She's a good way to pass time. She's also beautiful and loved by everyone. Taking into account his reputation as the most popular guy at school and undeniable good looks, they should be a safe pick for prom king and queen. But all her positive traits easily turned into negative when he isn't in the mood for talking about things she could go on about for hours. And this was one of those mornings. But putting on a smile, while resting his perfectly shaped face on his fist, followed by occasional nods was the perfect tactic to keep this thing working. It made her happy, so he was happy too. After all, he had the whole day to resume his paused game with Anthony.
"What?"Muttered Tia into her phone after the 3rd missed call.
"T, it's me!" The sound of her best friend's voice only made her hungover headache worse.
"What's up Lily? Time?"
"Are you still in bed?! It's 2pm! Get your ass up!" 2pm wasn't that bad. She thought she'd sleep for days after that party last night. She rubbed her eyes, and decided to let some sunlight in, throwing her bed sheets off of her. Walking through her spacious room, she took a glance in the mirror. Panties and bra. Good thing she was smart enough even in her drunken state, to take of that expensive little black dress. A little less attractive sight than her perfectly shaped body was her messy, long blonde hair and smeared make-up.
"I'm listening." She moaned as she decided to go straight to the shower.
" So Kevin and I talked about going to the movies tonight, wanna join? I think Dianna will be there too."
" Oh. So are you babysitting or trying to have fun?" She groaned while trying to balance on one leg taking the last piece of clothing off her body.
" T! She's only a year younger than us! So are you coming?"
" Are they the only part of the super fun crew tagging along or are there some more equally interesting candidates?"
" I'm thinking about inviting Eric too. He's so fun, and I haven't seen him for a while!"
" He'd also need some socializing, considering he'd rather spend the day with his guitar than actual people."
" Wow, you're in such a great mood today aren't you. Give him some time, T."
"Well I mean he's been here for a year, and I've never seen him with anyone other than us. I'm surprisingly not up for mr charity case that much either." Tia put her phone on speaker as she was enjoying the warm water running across her tired limbs.
" Jesus Tia. Let's just not. What's your answer then?"
" The answer is no. I really need to get myself together, I got hammered last night. We can hang out tomorrow though."
" We absolutely must! I have so much to tell you, like Alex this morning, we…"
Great, another story about Alex.
"As much as I'd love to listen to your love story, I have to hold in my puke for the rest of the day if I want to sober up."
"I meant because of the hangover Lily, it's the hangover. Hanging up now, gotta shower, bye!"
The sound of running water calmed her down. At least somewhat. As she was washing the black paint off her face, she tried not to think about last night. It was too early to question her moral. She also tried forgetting her bubbly best friend, transfer student and Alex for a moment. Especially Alex.
"Lily!" screamed a young girl, with an absolutely thrilled expression, kind of like a kid on Christmas day.
" Yooo, Dianna!" replied Lily in an equally excited manner, while hugging the only an inch shorter girl. "Kevin!"
"Hey Lily!" Kevin was a blonde football player with gorgeous blue eyes. A heartthrob, to say the least. He was also the childhood friend of both bubbly Lily and Tia, and the brother of Dianna. Only a year younger, Dianna had his brother's features, except for the slightly darker hair and brown eyes. Kevin's enviable genetics were from their French mother, while Dianna inherited hers from the American father. It was hard not to notice her long curls, styled almost exactly like Lily's, except for the bangs. Dianna's childlike face didn't go well with bangs. Their make-up was done almost identically, which comes as no surprise, considering Lily taught her friend all the necessary tricks. Someone could mistakenly think she was Lily's sister instead of Kevin's.
" I have to tell you about this cute bow I stumbled upon on instagram!" jumped the girl excitedly. Lily giggled both in excitement and adoration. Dianna reminded her of the young version of herself. So innocent and pure.
" As much as I hate to interrupt that story, our movie is starting in 10, so let's go!" Kevin put his arms around the two giggling girls.
" Oh, we have to wait for Eric though!" Lily's expression changed to somewhat worried. She's the one who's usually late, yet Eric managed to beat her in this flaw.
" Eric?" asked Dianna with puppy eyes that made Kevin laugh. It was cute, her harmless crush. As long it was harmless.
" At your service!" jumped the said guy behind the trio, making the girls scream. High five by the boys.
" We'd leave your ass behind if it were otherwise!" Kevin punched his shoulder lightly.
" Hey! I was finishing my new song if you really wanted to know!"
"I want to hear it!" Dianna's eyes lit up as she commented quietly, holding back her fascination. As a devoted musician herself, Eric's love for the guitar was one of the reasons she liked him so much. Besides his cute, messy black hair and boyish face.
"You will D, but only after we see this monster that destroys buildings or whatever!" he winked at the girl as he pointed at the Godzilla poster in front of them.
" Well if you don't want to miss the said monster, we should get going, NOW!" Lily hurried them, grabbing Dianna's and Eric's hand. He shivered. Tightening his grip, he prepared himself for a great night.
Yes. This was a great day indeed. For everyone. For most of them, at least. A great day during a great spring break.
