Cindy closed her phone, and smiled. “Well done, Arnold!”
Arnold wasn’t listening. That was broadcast throughout the entire school. That was broadcast through the entire school. What. The. Actual. Fuck.
At that moment Arnold seriously considered the consequences of attacking Cindy right then and there.
Cindy stared at Arnold’s fuming face for a few seconds, and then she burst out laughing. “Ahahaha! It was just a prank, just a prank. You should see the look on your face right now, Arnold. Calm down; you look like you’re about to murder someone. My phone can’t even do that in the first place.”
“…Are you serious?” said Arnold.
“Yeah. Don’t worry about it,” said Cindy laughing. “God, your face was priceless. Anyways, welcome to the newspaper club.”
Arnold wanted to flip the table into Cindy’s face. “…Is this how you welcome all new members?”
“Well, since I became in charge of admission, yeah, more or less,” said Cindy. “We like to have fun around here, Arnold. It’s an important part of our club culture.”
“That wasn’t very fun at all.”
“…Well, not for you I guess,” said Cindy, who barely suppressed a snicker. “But seriously. Congrats on joining the club. I would introduce the other members to you but they’re not here at the moment. We have club meetings every Wednesday after school so we’ll do introductions then. Anyways you’ll be in charge of a new column in our paper called, “Getting your opinions”. Basically, you’ll go around school interviewing people about various issues that high school students are dealing with. The first few topics will be given to you, until you get a feel for it. Then you can do whatever topic you feel like doing. As you know, our cafeteria is currently closed. Your first job is to go around surveying students about what they wish the cafeteria would serve. Easy enough, right? Our paper comes out Thursday so make sure you have it by the Wednesday meeting, alright?”
“Wait, tomorrow is Wednesday, right?” said Arnold.
“So yeah, have it by tomorrow then.”
And so Arnold left the newspaper office and headed back to room 2-08. By the time he got there homeroom was already more than half over.
“Hey, Arnold!” Carl waved his arms as Arnold entered the room. “Why are you so late?”
Arnold sat down at the table with Carl, Steph, and Don without a word.
Carl leaned in close to Arnold and whispered, “Is it because you were getting off to that picture of your cousin?”
Arnold looked at Carl with a blank stare. “I was at the newspaper office.”
“You’re in the newspaper now?” inquired Carl, as if he didn’t just say something extremely creepy and disturbing. “That’s cool. I can’t wait to read your stuff.”
“Anyways,” said Steph, interrupting. “I think we’re all waiting for something, aren’t we?”
Carl, Steph, and Don all simultaneously turned to Arnold.
“…What?” said Arnold.
“The picture,” said Carl. “Of your cousin.”
“I don’t have it. And I’ll never it to show any of you guys,” said Arnold.
“You’re so cruel, Arnold,” said Carl sarcastically. “Even after promising us you’d show it. And now you’re going back on your word? I thought you were better than this, Arnold.”
“I never promised you anything,” said Arnold. “I’m tired of your creepy games. I’m not going to give you anything so just stop.”
Carl’s face turned serious, something that Arnold had not seen thus far, and he said softly, “…alright. I understand.”
“Good,” said Arnold.
“You want to keep your hot sexy cousin all to yourself, don’t you Arnold? I totally understand your feelings, I totally do,” said Carl.
No you don't!
“But you shall not keep her from me! Mark my words, Arnold. I will get my hands on a picture of your cousin if it’s the last thing I do!”
“Such an honorable mission, Carl!” cried Don. “You are truly a man of the educational system."
I’m not even going to try to understand your logic anymore.
“Whatever,” muttered Arnold. At least now, Carl will stop bugging me.
“Eh,” said Steph. “I wasn’t really looking forward to the picture anyways. If she looks anything like Arnold, anyways.”
“…Wow, that’s not insulting at all,” said Arnold.
As the discussion came to a close, the school bell rang, signaling the end of homeroom.
